Nick Abel created this animated gif showing the time evolution of the H+ region and PDR after its ionizing star is rapidly turned on.  The x-axis is the depth from the illuminated face in centimeters.  The y-axis is the log of various ionization fractions.  The light blue shows the H⁺ fraction, the green is the H⁰ fraction, and the blue is the H₂ fraction.
